The Journey Begins

After three year of work I had enough on my bank account and my desire to travel independently grew. It was time to quit my job and start cycling again. For the beginning I decided to have it a bit easier but with a lot of beautiful nature - and New Zealand came into my mind. On December 28th it all begun. I travelled with Singapore Airlines from Zurich over Singapore to Auckland. The whole trip duration was 25hours, which my bottom didn't overly appreciate. But my bicycle never arrived in such a good condition, the carton was just minimally damaged, the bike not at all. But also this time it was a wise decision to be very early at the airport, as I had to pack twice. First time I just wrapped the bike, which got accepted on baggage drop, but refused on the bulky items counter. My reasons for packing light were of course the horribly high fees for overweight (70$/kg).

After packing it a second time (in a carton, which i bought at the Pack Safe counter for CHF25, including tools and help) it was accepted. They also didn't check the weight of the bike, but instead asked me ;) They even didn't add the wight of the carton (4kg) to the bike. The only complication was the repeated check in of my bike, which was already checked in ;) The flight was nearly boring, because the A380 is so quiet and stable in the air. But service was superb and friendly, it even tops SWISS! The Changi Aiport in Singapur is the best I've seen, with clean toilets, free unlmited internet, and even a butterfly garden. Despite the early, rather dark morning hours I had to try out my new camera on the exotic insects ;)

The flight to New Zealand was as enjoyable as the one before, except for the feeling on my bottom. I arrived midnight, got very fast through immigration and baggage check, as I cleaned bike, tent and shoes at home already (no food, no soil!).

I took the bus into the city, for $38 plus $5 for the bike.
